signed, under 1 condition.
the "looks" you select from are totally seperate from dropped swords, so you cant make a sword that looks like a crystaline. this means that the current swords would still maintain thier value among sword collectors, as you cant replicate them, but would give people an ability to make something customized to thier own personal tastes.
and the name of each sword would be your characters name, followed by sword, axe, whatever.
"Akhilleus Pthius' Sword" FTW. (or make it renamable, like pets)
as for the materials, im thinking you have to get a "weapon-liscence" which can be achjieved form some massive, arduous quest that takes multiple people and hours of work.
then, you take it to the forgemaster in the fissure of woe or wherever, and it needs like 500 iron ingots, 50 steel ingots. (wooden planks for an axe) and like a 15k craft cost. and each area the swrd is available in has its own "locational" look.
like a sword crafted form forgemaster would have options on the "eviler" side, one crafted in ascalon region would have a more playful or natural look. that way you end up with sword classes equivilant to fow armor and 15k armor.
that way when someone walks around with a pimp-assed sword design it begs the response "OMFG!"

Personally, I think it's a great idea, and with a little thought, the stupid crystalline/fellblades could keep their value. It's simple; instead of just using iron or steel to forge your blade, you'd have to use something like Adamantine for a fellblade, and Diamond for a crystalline. You could make a dragon sword with Dragon's Dung, and whatever else. The regular looking weapons you could have two options: bring like 3 regular weapons to forge your new one: In other words, scrap material. Or you could just bring a lot of iron/steel. As far as the glowy aura on things, it would sure give a purpose to Glittering Dust, eh? Perhaps 50 dust would be a good price, and have two seperate dye slots on the weapon customization window. One for the dust, and one for the actual weapon. The name of the weapon would be at the top. I'd love to have my bow named "BFG 5000".

Another thought: there would be a set price for weapons. For instance, a noob weapon would cost 100g to forge, and be something like a 7-11 sword. The medium weapon would be around 500g and be something like a 12-18 sword. The highest option would be 2k for a max damage weapon. This of course doesn't include materials and dyes, but you get the idea. In this way, the person that just started playing GW on their first character can still have their glowing red hammer named "Big Bertha".

okay, a couple of things.
first of all, i agree with the whole: "cant let a short sword become a fellblade" thing. totally destroys the fun of having one of those, because everyone has one. second of all, names. i agree with both akhilleus and Dean on this one. upon customization, the weapon would become (Characters Name)'s Sword of (your suffix choice). Mods still create the same name changes so it could be a: Dead Joe's Vampiric Fiery Sword of Noob-slaying. Third, location. once again, im with dean. its unrealistic enough that theres an armor crafter in FoW just standing by unharmed. not going to throw in a weapon customizer. these customizers would be in TOWNS ONLY. and as i mentioned earlier, your choises expand as the game goes on. so a recently ascended but rich noob cant make the awesome glowing flamberge that the guy at droknars can. Fourth. in case i didnt make it clear enough, this is CUSTOMIZATION. you are not under any circumstances crafting your own weapon. this is an existing drop that you think would look better with a bigger blade, or a ruby in the hilt (finally a use for them) No stat changes, no mods added, and color changes for individual sections WOULD be allowed, (maybe a small box to place dye next to the dropdown menu) any more questions, once again, post em and we'll answer.

no, you could make it bigger. so having a long sword and short sword would kinda be redundant, only you dont have to pay if you get a long sword drop. and you couldnt turn a short sword into a brute sword. not that big of a change.

There's not really a difference between crafting and customization. Think about it. All that you'd be using the extra material/other weapons for would be to make the modifications that you've specified to the weapon. (Blade length, extra ornamentation.)
Another idea is to use COLLECTOR ITEMS for this. For example, spiked crests would add cool spike things to the crossguard, or something.

As for the location thing, I can see that, because of the fact that this game has nothing as far as rewards go. The final crafter, I say, should be at Abaddon's Mouth, not at the forge. People can get run there, and dang near anywhere else, I should know. I have a runner.

As far as the mods, I can see the concern there.. so I propose a truce. If you have a sword that gives +13% when enchanted, but you don't use any enchantments, I think it'd be nice to change it to +13% while in stance, or whatever else. For a fee, of course.

Too add to my previous statement I think that if you get a fellblade you should have different customization features, then if you were to have a shortsword or long... This would take care of the shortsword into long by not giving the certain option to make it longer. It would still keep the "OMG" factor because pwople would semi be able to id it but still be in "Aww."

I also like the idea of having the names preselected this would stop Anet from having to worry about banning people for their swords and people complaining why there sword was deleted or what not. The given names should be plentiful and they too should have different places to get them from. Even create a "NameTraders" almost like skill traders. Possibly be willing to add more names on request.

They make sure that the customization options are unique to that place. you could have up to four forgers each with different options for customization. Like one place has certain hilts, one place the blades, etc. The options couldnt be from existing weapons either. i dont want someone walking around with a skinned short sword that looks like a fellblade (i like mine too much).

The materials would be obvious. however i would like to see the implementation of some, like dust, to make a weapon glow or something else special. Ecto or Shards could be a possible crafting material. gives people another use for em besides the FoW armor.

(in case you got lost and missed it) My one condition is that the skins have cant be from existing weapons.

Dunno if this has been suggested, but at least when you customize (+20% damage) a weapon, it should have your name IN the title. As in: Cruel Spiked Axe of Fortitude + Customized = Nyamo Kurosawa's Spiked Axe. I don't think this would take much to implement, and it would be a step in right direction to what the OP was suggesting.

Maybe we could have comically sized objects like a 20 foot tall sword or a 1 inch shield.

I would totally do it then.

awesome idea.

Only thing I would like is almost none of the weapons looking exactly the same. At first when i read this,I thought you meant completely "making" it, but I understand now. As much as I would liek to completely make it, it wont happen. So, the weapons would keep their main outline. But you could add a whole mix of thigns with hundreds and hundreds of possibilities. Say you added Spiked Crests to your remedy, your weapon, as someone said, would become spikey. But taken a step further, say yu add 50 crests instead of 10, it would be much more spikey. That way, even if everyone wanted spieky weapns, they would all be at differnet levels. And lets say you can add 3 things to it + the original cost and dye. So if it cost 100 iron, you could also add 10 spieky crests, 10 griffon wings, and 50 glittering dust, and a blue dye (which its affect would be wing-like hilt with spikes and glowing blue.

I would LOVE this feature. Anet make it for chp 2 please!
